Art of Motion Dance Theatre

SIX SOLOS: Legend, Myth & Nature, conceived and narrated by Lynn Needle, is a one-act hour long presentation of six solos spanning seven decades of modern dance history, including Alwin Nikolais’ seminal work Noumenon, Claudia Gitelman’s Impromptu, and Lynn Needle’s excerpts from HEAVEN and EARTHa creation myth, based on The Secret Life of Plants. The arc of the evening takes the audience through a visual and sculptural feast for the eyes that celebrates abstraction, nature, beauty, legend and dance as an art form. The concert unfolds with interludes of spoken text by Needle giving each solo context and includes elaborate costuming, jeweled masks, deconstructed modernism, a multi-media component with a kaleidoscopic film.

Art of Motion Dance Theatre is a Repertory Company performing original works by Associate Artistic Directors, Olivia Galgano, Lynn Needle and Guest Artists. Hailing from the Nikolais and Ballet Russe legacies, Needle and Galgano have created works defying logic. The multidisciplinary company features exotic handmade costumes, conceived, and constructed by visual and performing artist Annie Hickman. AOMDT has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, and was hailed by Out and About as "absolutely fantastic."

L+M

ARMAGEDDON OR SUNRISE OR SOMETHING is a duet made for and by Leah Wilks and Mauriah Kraker. The work is built on scores investigating exhaustion, endurance and the sensuality/the geographic of both internal and external landscapes. The duo grapples with the necessity of proximity to each other: they shake, rumble and drag each other to the ground, lift each other up, carry + sing to each other. Throughout the work the body becomes landscape, home, monument, spellcaster, caretaker, boundary, and the location of desires.

L+M (Leah Wilks + Mauriah Kraker) began making dances together while in graduate school in the flatlands of the midwest. Their duet works are endurance-driven events attentive to location and place. In 2019 L+M received the Wanda M. Nettl prize for choreography from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for their work ARMAGEDDON OR SUNRISE OR SOMETHING. Amidst a pandemic-produced pause from touring, they have engaged with the practices from the duet in different long-distance capacities - primarily by developing a series of sensorial and observational movement scores, and publishing written and photographic work derived from the process of making the piece.
